Poornaprajna College, popularly known as PPC, is situated in a vast green campus at the heart of Udupi city. It is at a short distance of 1 KM from Udupi Bus Stand, 4 KMs from Udupi Railway Station and about 45 KMs from Mangalore Air Port.
Poornaprajna College was founded in 1960 by the Swamijis of eight Mathas of Udupi. But, in February 1962, with a view to streamline the day-to-day working of the institution, its maintenance and governance were handed over to Admar Matha Education Council, a registered society functioning under the leadership of H. H. Sri Vibudhesha Theertha Swamiji of Admar Matha. Taking over the responsibilities of the education council, after he left for the heavenly abode, H. H. Sri Vishwapriya Theertha Swamiji governed the institutions until 2022. Now, the Council is functioning under the leadership of H. H. Sri Eeshapriya Theertha Swamiji of Sri Admar Matha.
Initially, the College provided courses in Arts and Commerce streams. In 1963, Science subjects were introduced at the Pre-University level. Two years later, Science stream was started at the degree level. Ten years later, in 1975, Management studies were introduced at the degree level. In 2001, the Pre-University courses were detached from the College and transferred to the newly established Poornaprajna Unaided Pre-University College. In its early days, the College had the privilege of having eminent scholars and writers like Prof. V.M. Inamdar, Dr. Shankar Mokasi Punekar, Prof. Gopalakrishna Adiga and Dr. P. Narayana Rao as its Principals. After these titans, the tradition was continued by able administrators such as Prof. K.G. Tantry, Prof. Sripathi Upadhya, Prof. H. Shivarama Shetty, Prof. Sudhakar Rao, Prof. M. Subrahmanya, Prof. N. B. Dixit, Dr. S. L. Karnik, Prof. A. K. Halapet, Dr. N.A. Madyastha, Prof. S. Subhashchandra and Prof. Rajmohan and Prof.K.Sadashiva Rao. Presently Dr. B. Jagadeesh Shetty is heading the institution.
The year 2009-10 being the 50th year, was celebrated as the Golden Jubilee Year. To commemorate the golden jubilee year celebration, an indoor stadium complex was constructed.
The College has been re-accredited by NAAC with Grade ‘A+’ (3.27 CGPA) for a further period of 5 years from 2022.
Our college has been conferred the “Award of Excellence” by Udupi Chamber of Commerce & Industry on 10-06-2012 for being the best college in Udupi district in the category of “Advanced Eduction” for the year 2011.
