The New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars (abbreviated as NGC) is a catalogue of deep-sky objects compiled by John Louis Emil Dreyer in 1888. The NGC contains 7,840 objects, known as the NGC objects. It is one of the largest comprehensive catalogues, as it includes all types of deep space objects, including galaxies, star clusters, emission nebulae and absorption nebulae.

NGC 2523

NGC 2523 is a barred spiral galaxy located around 168 million light-years away in the constellation Camelopardalis. NGC 2523 was discovered on 7 September 1885 by the American astronomer Edward Swift, and is approximately 120,000 light-years across. NGC 2523 does not have much star formation, and it does not have an active galactic nucleus. NGC 2523 is one of several galaxies chosen by Halton Arp as an example of a spiral galaxy that has a separation of one of its arms. It is listed in Arp's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies as Arp 9.
