Webinar on Opportunities in Space Science and Astronomy

July 29, 2020

After the Online workshop last month, the feedback motivated us to organize another event for amateur astronomers and space enthusiasts. This time it was a webinar by a very inspiring personality.

The Webinar was on the topic Opportunities in Space Science and Astronomy which was organized on 23rd July 2020.

The speaker was :

  • Dr. P. Sreekumar, Satish Dhawan Professor, Former Director of Space Science Program Office, ISRO.

Dr. P. Sreekumar was an inspiration to us all with his career that has spanned decades of space science and research with his Ph.D which he obtained from University of New Hampshire in Gamma-Ray Astrophysics, a decade of research work at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, two decades at ISRO working on GSAT, Chandrayan-1 payloads. He has also served as the Director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics for half a decade in between, on deputation from ISRO. After superannuation from ISRO in Jan 2020 is currently serving in capacity as the Satish Dhawan Professor at ISRO.

Dr. Sreekumar spoke on the need to travel to space and what are the opportunities that students have in front of them to take up space science as a career. He also spoke of the various future projects at ISRO, but more importantly spoke of the kind of mindset a student needs to have to take up such a field. With clear and brilliant examples he spoke to students about how they need to train themselves in problem solving and analysis for what future holds for them in the field.

We were joined by Mrs. Niveditha B.K. from ISRO, who took part in the discussion and answered queries from students about joining ISRO and the Opportunities they have and the path of space science, while the Dr. Sreekumar answered queries related to his talk.
