PAAC wishes you all a Happy New Year. Although the “New Year” according to Gregorian calendar is merely change of the 4 digits that we use to represent the year, and the Earth is constantly completing one revolution around the Sun, every day, compared to its position 365 rotations ago, PAAC also celebrates the Astronomy Insignificant – New Year.
New Year New Events
2024 is a fascinating Year to us all. We’ve got Lunar Occultations of Spica, Antares and Elnath repeatedly visible across various regions on the globe, throughout the year. We’ve also got some amazing Lunar Occultations of Planets like Saturn and Venus occurring multiple times, and also of Mars. A Total Solar Eclipse – a phenomenon that will be rare in the coming years (say next millennia), an Annular Eclipse and a Partial Lunar Eclipse visible across various countries.
This year, we’ve also got the usual, the great meteor showers, the Lunar conjunctions with planets and 4 supermoon (or 2 depending upon which definition you follow). However, unlike 2023 – 2024 is the year with no Blue Moon, making the Blue Moon keep its ‘status’.
So be sure to watch out for the various events that will be visible at your locations, and for more details of each event, be sure to check out our website from time to time.
Astronomy Calendar 2024
This New Year, like the years before this, we bring you the PAAC Astronomy Calendar 2024 where we list out the various astronomy events in 2024.
The 2024 calendar is an upgrade in design compared to the previous years, specifically 2023’s design as we ditched the timeline and made the months, appear more ordered. You’ll also find that the calendar is color coded for various types of events, with the important events specified in Bold.
This year, we’ve also listed the ZHR for all meteor showers displayed and ignored showers with ZHR less than 2. More Maps and Country flags have been used to specify the regional visibility for various important events and of course, a glossary of important astronomy terms, making use of the empty spaces provided.
