Super August with 2 Supermoons of 2023

August 1, 2023

August is here! And the August of 2023 is a special month for Astronomers. A Super August if you will… As August will have two of the four Supermoons this year.

This is the month where we will have 2 Full Moons. And both of the Moons are Supermoons. The Sturgeon Moon i.e. the first Full Moon of August occurring on 1st August 2023, will be the second Supermoon of the year as the Moon is near the Perigee when it enters its Full Phase. This ‘Supermoon’ will be closer than the first Supermoon of the year that occurred last month. This month’s first Full Moon will occur with the Moon at a distance of 357,530 km[ref].

What is a Supermoon?

A Supermoon is a Full Moon when the Earth and the Moon are closer than usual. We’ve got a Page that explains what a Supermoon is.

Once in a Blue Moon!

The Second Full Moon of this August is also called a Blue Moon. NO! The Moon will not appear blue, as it is just a way of calling a rare occuring Moon. The Blue Moon is the 4th Full moon in an astronomical season, and therefore the 2nd Full Moon of this month on 31st August will be a Blue Moon which will also be at Perigee. In fact, the Blue Moon this year will be closer, shining from a distance of 357,344 km, making it the Biggest and the Brightest Supermoon of 2023.

Enjoy the Super-August this year which will be a Completely Full-Moon-Wrapped month that begins and ends with Full Moons. A month with 2 Full Moons, 2 Supermooons and a Blue Moon. Technically 2 Full Moons only! But Yay!
